Observation becomes fascination. Fascination becomes elevation.

I wanted this painting to sit somewhere between science and art. Bees are tiny, intricate creatures, and painting them at this scale gave me a reason to really study them. Their wings, their bodies, the subtle differences between three bees that at first glance might look the same.

Stacking them vertically gave the painting a contemporary, almost specimen-like quality, while the paint splatters rough it up just enough to keep it from feeling too precious or clinical. The soft blue background acts almost like the sky, a quiet neutral that brings the study back into nature.

The most special details are the ones that are hardest to photograph. Each wing is carefully outlined and detailed in gold leaf, catching and reflecting light as you move around the painting. It’s something you really have to see in person.

That gold is my way of elevating an everyday subject. Bees do these incredibly specific, important jobs all around us, mostly without our noticing. There is something very Virgo about that: the small things, the details, the work, the systems that quietly keep everything moving.

This painting is about stopping long enough to notice.
